New Year Accomplishments Update

It’s been about two and a half months since the last “Accomplishments Update”. It’s been a month and a half since I started the new schedule. As I’m going on vacation starting, well, now, it’s a good time to take a look and see how things are going. Let’s go in the normal order:

DVDs and TV shows/movies are working out great under the new schedule. I’ve watched a number of the shows that I’ve always meant to watch, like “Scream Queens”, “John Woo’s Once a Thief”, and “Alien Nation”. At the same time, I was able to rewatch some shows, like “Firefly” and something that I’ll write about next week in “V”, as well as finishing the first season of “Star Trek: TOS”. I also managed to do something that I hadn’t been able to do for a while, which was watch some of my backlog of non-horror movies (I also watched a number of horror movies, so watch for comments on them in the future). It was a mix of movies I had never watched and ones that I had, as I watched “Casablanca”, “Jumanji”, “Paradise Hills”, “King Kong: Skull Island” (which I’m not going to talk about), and probably something else that I can’t remember right now. This category was always the best for me, and it’s working even better now.

Books are going okay. I’ve started reading philosophy works, and am now about halfway through Kant’s “Critique of Pure Reason”. The negative here is that I can’t read philosophy while watching TV, and so have carved out an hour of time to do it an evening, but other things have been getting in the way of doing that. I probably have to be more stringent about making sure that I do it each evening, but that won’t happen while I’m on vacation. On the plus side, doing that scheduling has meant that I can read books just for fun again in my normal reading times, which allowed me to re-read the “X-Wing” books and read the V book “The Second Generation” (which I’ll talk about in the near future). So even though reading Kant is going slower than I’d like, it’s balanced by the fact that I’m able to read things that I’ve wanted to read for fun again.

Video games is actually going pretty well. I finished “Elsinore”, and am getting significant time into “Everybody’s Golf”. I’m also about seven hours or so into “Steins;Gate”, when the plot is finally starting to move. This category pretty much never worked out for me, but it’s doing pretty well right now.

But Projects, Hobbies and Learning … aren’t. I have done no programming projects. I tried to play chess once and realized that I need a better chess program, as chess.org confused me with the time limits and my two chess programs — Battle Chess and Combat Chess — didn’t seem to work that well for me. I also planned to do some studying on Deep Learning and never did. And since the first week of my vacation is pretty much going to be watching curling, it’s not gonna happen there either. This is definitely something I need to work on.

Still, it’s a pretty good result, and so a pretty good schedule. Let’s see how it all shakes out as the year goes on.
